Samuel Ailstock and his wife Amanda Williams-Beverly about 1890 in Upshur County, West Virginia, or possibly earlier in Amherst County, Virginia. Samuel (son of Absalom and Betsey Ailstock) was  born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, in 1843, listed in the 1850 Albemarle County census as a "Mulatto," fought in the 25th "colored" Infantry in the Civil War. He and Amanda were married 25 January 1866 in Amherst County. Amanda Williams-Beverly, also listed as a "Mulatto" in census records, was the widow of Alexander Beverly (son of Samuel Beverly and Rhoda Terry of of Amherst County) who died fighting for the Confederacy.
